Chapter 3
The following day, I found myself making a rather unusual visit to the local prison. I didn't think I was going to come here. I never thought I would have a reason to come to this place.
The iron bars, the stench of sweat and rust, the echoing sounds of despair â it was all very familiar, yet somehow, I felt a sense of detachment. I had never been imprisoned. I couldn't help but wonder why I felt the place was familiar. Maybe it was because of the dungeon I had? It was possible.
It was also as if I was merely observing a scene from a movie, rather than being a part of it. It was kind of weird.
I approached the guard's station, my eyes locking with the warden's. He was a burly man, his eyes hard and unforgiving. He didn't look like someone who could be easily intimidated. And, I didn't come here to intimidate him.
"Donny, what brings you here?" he asked, his voice gruff. "I hope you're not causing trouble."
He already knew me. He was a regular at the hucow nightclub.
I arched an eyebrow, a smile playing on my lips. "Warden, I assure you, I'm here on official business," I said, my tone even. Internally, however, I was smiling. "I need to speak with one of your inmates."
He frowned, his eyes narrowing. "And who might that be?"
"Robert," I replied, my gaze never wavering. "I believe you have him in custody."
The warden's eyes widened slightly, his gaze flicking to the other guards before returning to me. He was wondering if he should do what I wanted. If he didn't, there would be negative consequences for him.
"You can't be serious," he muttered, shaking his head. "I don't think it's a good idea for you to see him."
I leaned forward, my voice low and threatening. Did he think I came here to waste my time?
"Warden, I assure you, it's not a request. I need to speak with him. Now."
He hesitated for a moment, his eyes searching mine for any sign of weakness. But he must have found none, for he eventually sighed and nodded. I expected him to do that.
"Very well," he said, gesturing for a guard to escort me. "But I'm warning you, Donny, if you cause any trouble, I'll have you thrown out of here faster than you can say 'hucow'."
I smiled, offering him a curt nod. Did he really think something like that would happen? That he could do it? Laughable, to say the least.
"Understood," I lied, following the guard as he led me through the maze of corridors.
As we approached Robert's cell, I could sense the tension in the air. He was sitting on the edge of his cot, his hands clasped tightly in front of him. His eyes widened in shock as he caught sight of me, and he immediately began to yell for the guards. He didn't think I was going to come here. Neither I had thought until a few hours ago.
"Help! Help me! He's here to kill me!" He cried, his voice echoing off the cold stone walls.
